Sant’Ermete 2019

On 28 August 2019, on the occasion of the great feast of Sant’Ermete, the patron saint of Forte dei Marmi, the center will be enlivened by a whirlwind of appointments: historical procession, the focata, the fair and the fireworks.

The traditional “Focata” will illuminate Piazza Garibaldi, an event that, in the history of Forte dei Marmi, represented the ceremony in which the old was burned to propitiate a better future and which still today is an opportunity for meeting and celebration for the fortemermini and tourists.

The event will be preceded by the blessing to the city with the Relic from the grades of the church of Sant’Ermete and from the parade of the city band La Marinara.

On 28 August it will be entirely dedicated to the great Fair – Market in the streets of the town, where from 7 to 24, about 400 stalls will offer all kinds of merchandise.

Buon Ferragosto 2019 !

The origins of the August 15th anniversary are ancient and must be sought in the Consulalia, that is the Roman feasts in honor of the god Conso, divinity of the harvest stored in the barns.

During these holidays they used to exchanged gifts reciting the phrase “Bonas ferias consulales”. When the Roman month corresponding to August was dedicated to the emperor Caesar Augustus, the formula changed to “Bonas feria augustales”, a wish very similar to our “Good mid-August”!

Caesar Augustus then decided, in 18 d. C., to institute the feast of Ferragosto, called at the time of the Augustei or Feria Augustalis (ie the Augustus holidays) to celebrate the harvest and the end of the work in the fields.

Connecting to the other holidays established during the month of August, this festival allowed the workers to rest, about a month, after a long year of hard work. During the festivities, throughout the Roman Empire, horse, donkey and mule races were set up, dressed up with brightly colored flowers.
